"This commentary on the second half of Ezekiel brings together the enormous body of historical information from the literature of the ancient Near East in the sixth century BCE to put into a new perspective the life and message of one of the most mysterious of the Hebrew prophets...An invaluable resource for all serious students of Ezekiel."

—Lawrence Boadt, Washington Theological Union

"A thorough, meticulous, and information-filled commentary...Readers will find here some of the best, and certainly the most extensive, material on a biblical book that may well have particular appeal and relevance in our postmodern age."

—Elmer A. Martens, Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary

"Block considers his chief task to be the interpretation of the book of Ezekiel in its canonical form...His philological scrupulousness, which is grounded in familiarity with the latest scholarship, is matched by a concern for the theological issues raised by the book of Ezekiel and for its homiletic potential. Critical judgment and respect for Ezekiel's sacred status are happily combined."

—Moshe Greenburg, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

"Ground-breaking. Like its companion volume, this one demonstrates an awareness of and an engagement with all the significant primary and secondary literature pertaining to this often enigmatic composition and without exception arrives at sound conclusions that do honor to the Book of Ezekiel as sacred Scripture...If one can acquire only one commentary on Ezekiel, this should be it...Block's contribution will be the standard for many years to come."

—Bibliotheca Sacra

"This conclusion to Block's work on Ezekiel is by any measure a substantial contribution...Block's explications of the text's 'Nature and Design' are both learned and highly readable. His lively and wide-ranging discussion of the gog pericope provides an especially engaging treatment of this controversial text. The extensive footnotes should prove helpful to anyone undertaking further research...Block's achievement is impressive in producing a commentary that will be a useful reference for all scholars while also serving the needs of a specifically evangelical readership."

—Interpretation

"The completion of this extensive work represents a considerable achievement and constitutes a welcome addition to the literature on Ezekiel."

—Journal for the Study of the Old Testament

"The commentary is itself a magnificent achievement, full of information and exegetical insights, well worth reading and pondering by fellow exegetes, whatever their theological hue or ideological commitment."

—Expository Times

"With the present book, the second and concluding installment, Daniel Block has completed his magisterial commentary. The author is to be congratulated on what now ranks as the major learned commentary on Ezekiel...Block is always fair to other scholars and endeavors to present their diverging views in a detailed manner."

—Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete (IZBG)

To many modern readers the prophecies of Ezekiel are a mystery. This commentary by Daniel Block - which complete his two-volume study of the whole book of Ezekiel - seeks to answer the questions that contemporary readers bring to the text by examining the language, the message, and the methods of this obscure and often misunderstood Hebrew prophet. The result of twelve years of studying this difficult section of Scripture, this volume, like the one on chapters 1-24, provides an excellent discussion of the background of Ezekiel and offers a verse-by-verse exposition of each literary/prophetic unit in the last half of Ezekiel, not only making clear the prophet's message to his original readers but also showing that Ezekiel's ancient wisdom and vision are still very much needed in the church today.

About the New International Commentary Old Testament Series
“In the Old Testament we read God’s word as it was spoken to his people Israel. Today, thousands of years later, we hear in these thirty-nine books his inspired and authoritative message for us.”

These twin convictions, shared by all of the contributors to The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, define the goal of this ambitious series of commentaries. For those many modern readers who find the Old Testament to be strange and foreign soil, the NICOT series serves as an authoritative guide bridging the cultural gap between today’s world and the world of ancient Israel. Each NICOT volume aims to help us hear God’s word as clearly as possible.

Scholars, pastors, and serious Bible students will welcome the fresh light that this commentary series casts on ancient yet familiar biblical texts. The contributors apply their proven scholarly expertise and wide experience as teachers to illumine our understanding of the Old Testament. As gifted writers, they present the results of the best recent research in an interesting manner.

Each commentary opens with an introduction to the biblical book, looking especially at questions concerning its background, authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology. A select bibliography also points readers to resources for their own study. The author’s own translation from the original Hebrew forms the basis of the commentary proper. Verse-by-verse comments nicely balance in-depth discussions of technical matters - textual criticism, critical problems, and so on - with exposition of the biblical writer’s theology and its implications for the life of faith today.

About the Author
Daniel I. Block is professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College. He has written numerous scholarly articles and reference works and served as a senior translator for the New Living Translation. His other books include The Gods of the Nations: Studies in Ancient Near Eastern National Theology.
