2009 WORDsearch Conference Recap

During the week of September 28, WORDsearch held its annual conference. This year was an absolutely amazing year and there were so many memorable moments that it’d be impossible to list them all here. One of the most notable things was the number of people who attended the conference this year, nearly a hundred pastors and teachers showed up, more than doubling last year’s numbers.

Some of the most memorable moments came at our evening sessions when we had author/preachers Rod Mattoon and Donald Cantrell speak. Both of them delivered powerful messages that left the attendees captivated and inspired to better serve the Lord. Not only that, but they made themselves available before and after to talk with the pastors and share their ideas. There was certainly a lot of fellowship that took place before, after & during the sessions. I know I found myself helping many pastors with computer problems, and then just sitting down and sharing conversations with them about the ministry and how exciting the Word of God is. The entire week was like that. Plus, many of our longtime users finally got the opportunity to meet their favorite sales representatives face-to-face for the first time, after talking to them on the phone for years. There was even one pastor who brought one of our sales reps an authentic New York City cheesecake as an early birthday gift & for always helping him out. That’s how much our users love WORDsearch (not that you have to bring us a cheesecake LOL).

If there was one thing that most people were excited about, it was getting an advanced copy of WORDsearch 9, which will be available for purchase next month. There are lots of new features in the software, and our trainers spent a lot of time covering these new features and showing how they are invaluable to your Bible study. This is the main reason why everyone attended and it really showed. They were so excited about the training and learning WORDsearch 9 that we ended up adding in extra training sessions. Because of the desire for these extra sessions, I personally led an impromptu early morning training session on the second day, and we also had an evening session on Wednesday evening teaching the basics of using LESSONmaker 8. With all of the training we did & papers we gave out, I’m confident that everyone left the conference knowing how to better use the WORDsearch program.

For those that weren’t able to make it, you truly missed out! There was a lot of great fellowship and teaching going on, and we missed having you there. I encourage you to start making plans now to attend our conference next year. You’ll make lots of new friends, meet the WORDsearch team, and learn the in’s & out’s of your favorite Bible study software. So, if you missed this year, I look forward to seeing you next year.

Be sure to keep scrolling and view additional photos from the conference.

Bible Study Tutorial

bible_study_tutorialI’m a big fan of Bible study software, and I especially love WORDsearch and what they offer. They’re the reason why I moved to Austin, TX to begin with! But as much as I’m a fan of the software, I’m a student of the Word of God and I think it’s important that people get equipped with the necessary tools to adequately study the Bible and understand what it’s saying. That is one of the reasons why I appreciate programs like WORDsearch 8 and Bible Explorer, because they make the Bible and the necessary study resources available to Christians all over the world.

Well, it’s one thing to have the resources, but it’s also important to know how to use them in your personal Bible study. It was with this thought in mind that I sat down a couple of years ago and put together a video tutorial teaching the basics of studying the Bible, but doing so with the aide of Bible Software, specifically WORDsearch 8. Living in a digital age, it’s only right for us to take advantage of the resources made available to us so that we can rightly divide the Word of truth.

Whether you’re wanting to know how to study the Bible or want to know how Bible study can help you study the Bible better, click the image & head on over to my ministry website and take a look at the video. And feel free to share it with others that may benefit from it!

What’s new this week? September 11, 2009

Billy Graham said this at Vance Havner’s funeral in 1986:

“Of course, we’re going to miss him. Especially those of us who preach, for his books are on all of our shelves and his illustrations are in our sermons. Someone has said everyone is born an original and dies a copy. That wasn’t true of Vance Havner. Vance Havner was an original and died and original.”

This week we’ve added 5 works by Vance Havner. You can learn more about him under “About the Author” on the product pages linked below, and you can see all Vance Havner works available from WORDsearch.

We also released Life of Christ, by Dr. Gary Staats, which is a study of the life of Christ from the Hebrew Scriptures as seen through the eyes of the New Testament writers.

WORDsearch Tip: Bible Shortcuts

Let’s say you have your favorite Bible translation open in WORDsearch, and you want to study Galatians 5:1.  To get there quickly, you can type Ctrl-G, then type “Gal 5.1″ to open the Bible to Galatians 5:1 from your keyboard.

This verse says:

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1 (ESV)

Now, here are some things you can do in literally 5 seconds or less:

  • Search this Bible for every instance of the word “freedom.” You just right-click on “freedom” with your mouse (or Command-click for Mac users), then pick Search for “freedom” in… and click on your Bible translation. Or all of your Bibles. Or every book in your library!

bible-right-click

  • Search all of your topical books for “freedom.” Just right-click and select “Topical search for freedom”
  • Get a definition of the word “yoke.” Right-click on “yoke” and select “Definition for yoke.” Results from four different online dictionaries will appear.
  • Copy the verse. Again, right-click and select “Copy.” If you want to copy multiple verses, just click and drag to select some part of each verse, then right-click and “Copy.”
  • Print the verse. You can select multiple verses and print them.  You’ll get them nicely formatted, right away, without having to copy and paste them into a document.
  • Do an Instant Verse Study.  IVS lets you select Bible, Commentaries, and personal notes from your library, then it finds any passages from those books which are relevant to the verse you’re studying.  The passages are copied to your clipboard, so you can paste them anywhere you like.
