In his commentary on 1 & 2 Kings, Dr. Gary Staats introduces the book to the reader with a thorough explanation of the book's title, author, date of writing, its historical background, and purpose. He then presents a detailed outline of the book. Finally, Dr. Staats takes the student through the books of 1 & 2 Kings verse-by-verse. In his verse-by-verse analysis, Dr. Staats makes note of important geographical, historical, cultural, and extra-biblical facts and findings that may prove helpful to proper interpretation and understanding. Special attention is given to the ministries of Elijah and Elisha with emphasis on the Ugaritic texts of the Ancient Near East to shed light on the times of the ministries of these prophets. About the Author Dr. Gary Staats is the Gale and Harriette Ritz professor of Old Testament at Winebrenner Theological Seminary in Findlay, Ohio. He received his Bachelor of Arts degreee in Bible at Southeastern Bible College in Birminghm, Alabama, in 1963; his ThM in New Testament Greek from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967; his ThD in Biblical Studies from DTS in 1971; and his Master of Arts in Hebrew and Ancient Near Eastern languages at Dropsie College of Hebrew and Cognate Learning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1983. He completed his PhD in Hebrew and Near Eastern Languages at New York University in 1989. Dr. Staats has been a professor and pastor for many years, serving at various schools and in numerous pastorates.
