About the Author After studying the Bible, Finney began to question his salvation. And according to his memoirs, he tells how he left his house one morning for a walk. After a quarter of a mile, "I turned to go up into the woods, I recollect to have said, 'I will give my heart to God, or I never will come down from here.' I had gone into the woods after an early breakfast; when I returned to the village, I found it was dinner time." After this experience with God, he made the decision to no longer practice law, but rather pursue full-time ministry. In December of 1823, he became a licensed minister by the Presbyterian Church, Evans Mills, New York. Over the next two years, many people of Western New York were touched by the Revival-Fire preaching of Finney. Comparisons to President Andrew Jackson were drawn by many by his demeanor in the pulpit. His reputation as a speaker continued to grow, while ministering in Rochester, NY in 1830-31 many have labeled it as the greatest year of spiritual awakening in American history, as an estimated 600,000 people accept Jesus Christ as Savior. The impact of his redemptive messages caused many people to shut down their businesses so that everyone could go and hear Finney's message. One of the most famous things Finney did was implement "Public Professions of Faith" where people would come down the isle of the Church to proclaim their faith, and he also set up the opportunity for seekers to be counseled about their faith before making the profession. An uncommon practice at the time, which has been adopted as a standard for many Churches today.
