First published in the 1880's, The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah is one of the best known and most important references on the life of Christ ever written, This classic work brings to life the streets, the marketplaces, the religious conflicts, the people, and the places of Jesus' earthly ministry.

The Life and Times of Jesus the Messiah is divided into five books:

  1. The Preparation for the Gospel—Introductory historical, religious, political, and cultural materials.
  2. From Bethlehem to Jordan—The background of Herod and his reign, St. John the Baptist and his message, and the birth and baptism of Jesus.
  3. From Jordan to the Mount of Transfiguration—Thirty-seven chapters explore the miracles and teachings of Jesus' early ministry.
  4. The Descent into the Valley of Humiliation—A history of the latter part of Jesus' ministry from the Transfiguration to the journey to Jerusalem.
  5. The Cross and the Crown—A chronicle of each day of Passion Week, from Palm Sunday to the Resurrection.
  6. Appendices—Valuable background material on Jewish history, tradition, and law.

Through his deep devotion to the authority of the Scriptures, Edersheim makes the Scriptures come alive in their ancient context, and his intimate familiarity with ancient Jewish sources enriches this classic and timeless work. Edersheim frequently refers to the The Works of Josephus, The Works of Philo as well as rabbinic sources and citations from Scripture.

This book is a great resource to the serious student of the life of Christ and to those interested in the history and culture of the time.

About the Author
Alfred Edersheim (1825-1889) was born in Vienna, Austria to Jewish parents, and was brought up in the Talmudic traditions and customs of the Jewish faith. After moving to Hungary, he met Dr. John Duncan, a Presbyterian Minister, who shared the message of the Gospel with him. He then converted from Judaism to Christianity and spent the most of his life serving as a minister and missionary to the Jews of Romania.

Edersheim's unique position as a scholar trained in both the Jewish and the Christian traditions including all the Biblical languages and his extensive knowledge and understanding of the culture and religious beliefs in early first century Roman-ruled Judea make him quite an authority on all things Biblical.
