Product Highlights
"A lifetime of preaching and teaching the art of preaching crackles and pops in this bonfire of a book. In sentences of heat and light - blazing passion, luminous intelligence - Calvin Miller, one of our best preachers and writers, tells us what he does best and why and how." "Calvin Miller understands preaching. He understands that it is about the heart as well as the mind, about the imaginative as well as the rational, about reaching people as well as teaching the Word, about exegeting a culture as well as expounding a text, and about painting an image as well as stating a proposition. Most of all he understands that preaching is a work of the Spirit who will not be harnessed by our conventions, but who will bless those compelled to tell his story with a pastor's care for souls, an apologist's zeal for truth, and a poet's ear for his culture's heartbeat. Calvin Miller has long been the poet of preachers; now he comes as a master storyteller to teach us how to tell the gospel to a generation thirsting for narratives to explain our world." "If you are a preacher, read this book! Calvin Miller has a lot to say about preaching and he says it well. Preaching: The Art of Narrative Exposition may take a few hours to read, but it can change your preaching for a lifetime." "Calvin Miller is a talented preacher and teacher of preachers, and his own gifts are on display in this outstanding volume. Miller's book is filled with practical insights that reflect his own rich experience in the pulpit, and his work on narrative exposition is an important contribution that will help both novice and veteran preachers explore new approaches to proclaiming biblical truth. Any preacher's work will be strengthened by a careful reading of Miller's excellent new book." "This is a wonderful book. I expect that this one will become his legacy. Miller offers an education in preaching rich in reality. The book is rich in both stimulating ideas as well as stories that deepen and delight." A Powerful Synthesis of Biblical Truth and Storytelling Pastors and seminary students need to learn how to connect to younger church members, such as GenXers and millenials. They need a fresh wineskin for the timeless message of redemption. The challenge of contemporary preaching is packaging a message that holds the attention and touches the hearts of those who listen-while offering biblical substance in the process. Many preachers long to bring exposition and narrative together in a style that leads to transcendent moments. This book will help you embrace this healthy combination and preach in a way that is kingdom-building. Calvin Miller has preached and equipped preachers for decades. In Preaching, he offers a volume of helpful insights for pastors and homiletics students to deliver the heart of the gospel via the Jesus-approved vessel of compelling storytelling. About the Author His first full-time pastorate was Plattsmouth Baptist Church, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, 1961-1966. He went to Westside Church, Omaha, Nebraska, in January 1966, where he served as senior pastor for 25 years. During his pastorate the congregation grew from 10 members to more than 2500 members. From 1991-1998, Miller served as Professor of Communication and Ministry Studies and Writer-in-Residence at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas. In January 1999, he joined the faculty of Samford University’s Beeson Divinity School in Birmingham, Alabama, where he is currently Professor of Preaching and Pastoral Ministry. He has served as an inspirational speaker in various assemblies and religious convocations, both in his own denomination and other Christian gatherings. Dr. Miller believes in the primacy of evangelism for the church in every age. In his own church ministry he has sought to be both a contemporary apologist, helping the church provide answers for a secular culture, and the equipper of the contemporary church for the task of missions and evangelism. His most recent books and articles have dealt with spirituality as a journey and the pilgrimage which strives for union with Christ.
