The Office and Work of the Holy Spirit is divided into three parts of study: The Spirit's work in the conversion of sinners; illustrative cases; and, the Spirit's work in the edification of his people after their conversion.

The first section, the Spirit's work in the conversion of sinners, analyzes the great need unconverted persons have for a spiritual change. Discussion of the Spirit's work in the world and the church is included, as well as the process of conversion by which individuals are transferred from the world into the church. The work of the Spirit in enlightening the mind, convincing the conscience, renewing the heart, and the subsequent results of the Spirit's work are all considered in this first portion of the book.

The second portion of the book, illustrative cases, looks at Biblical accounts of the Spirit converting men to Christ. In particular the stories of the Philippian jailer, the crucified criminal, Paul, the Ethiopian treasurer, Cornelius, Lydia, Timothy, and the hosts of people converted at Pentecost and various revivals are examined to gain insight into the practical and historical ways the Spirit has moved in conversions.

Finally, Buchanan examines the work of the Spirit in the edification of his people after their conversion. Specifically, the reader will find information on the Spirit's work as the Spirit of Holiness, Adoration, Prayer, and Comfort.

About the Author
James Buchanan, D.D. (1804-1870) was a preacher, professor, and theological writer. He studied at the University of Glasgow, was licensed in 1826 and ordained in 1827. He served in the Church of Scotland prior to working with such reformers as Thomson, Chalmers, Candlish, and Gordon to establish the Free Church of Scotland. Within the Free Church of Scotland, he was known to have preached with great theological insight, graceful style, and profound conviction. In 1845, Buchanan left the ministry for a professorship of apologetics at the New College (Free Church) in Edinburgh. He was awarded the degree of D.D. by Princeton University in 1844 and later an LL.D. by the University of Glasow. By 1847, he was the chair of systematic theology, which he occupied until health problems forced him to resign in 1868.
