“The best of modern translations”

—The Living Church

The "Jerusalem Bible" was conceived during the years of the Second World War as a way of bringing the assured results of modern Biblical scholarship to the general reading public. The project was to consist of new translations of each book of the Bible, equipped with footnotes explaining the text and with inner-biblical cross-references in the margins. Each book, or group of books, was to have a substantial Introduction, in which it would be presented, along with discussion of questions concerning text, literary history, historical context, canonicity, theology.

The Jerusalem bible was written in 1955 by French Dominicans of the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem.

Completed in 1956, its original title was simply "La Sainte Bible" ("The Holy Bible"), but, because of the connexion with Jerusalem, it quickly became known as "La Bible de Jerusalem" ("The Jerusalem Bible"), which is now its official name. At the time of its appearance, it was generally acknowledged to have set a new standard in Bible publication, and the formula of introduction, text in translation, notes and references has been adopted by many others. Originally thought of as primarily a study Bible, the Jerusalem Bible has also been widely used as a liturgical text.

The Jerusalem Bible was first published in English in 1966 by Darton, Longman and Todd, and Doubleday. A few years later, in 1973, the French original was thoroughly revised, and that in turn led to the publication of "The New Jerusalem Bible" in 1985.

The New Jerusalem Bible has been updated to include more inclusive language and different footnotes than the original text. However, much of the style of its predecessor has been preserved.
