Early in his ministry as a Methodist Preacher, Dr. Frank Charles Thompson realized that the reference Bibles then on the market failed to present the Bible as it should be presented - in a clear, scholarly, interesting, yet simple and compact form. He saw the need for a well-organized reference Bible that would be of practical use to the layman as well as a minister.

He began his original research about 1890. After he completed the thought suggestions opposite the verses throughout the Bible, some of the men in his church saw his Bible and told him that this was what they needed to help them in their Bible study. They encouraged Dr. Thompson to have his Bible, with marginal references, published so that everyone could have the advantage of these helps in their Bible study.

In 1908, the first printing and binding of the first edition of the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible^® was done by Methodists Book Concern of Dobbs Ferry, New York.

An Excellent Resource, November 5, 2009

The Thompson Chain Reference Bible is an excellent resource for personal study, or Bible lesson creation. I had often thought about getting one, and recently I purchased a copy of WORDsearch Bible software, and the "Thompson Chain Reference Bible Library". They have partnered with Kirkbride on this, and I must say that this an excellent software package. It contains all of the latest TCR reference information, and being in an electronic format, following a topic is just a matter of click, click, click. And looking up a topic number, map, or other information does not require paging through the index, again it's just a matter of selecting what you want to see. The reference works that come with the package are worth the price, and having WORDsearch give you access to download their 200+ free resources, as well as being able to purchase more than 1000 others, only adds to the usefulness, and value. As far as the WORDsearch program itself, I agree wholeheartedly with John W Gillis on his MaybeToday.org blog: "WORDsearch is far and away the best program I’m aware of at putting the output of Bible Study work (studies, lessons, sermons, and other documentation) at the center of the program, where it belongs. No one else seems to even be taking this aspect of program functionality seriously, which puts WORDsearch in a class by themselves in this area." For it's integration of the TCR system, and usefulness, I could not recommend this program more.
