Frequently Asked Questions

WORDsearch 7 and Vista Compatibility
Is WORDsearch 7 compatible with Vista?

We do have a WORDsearch 7 program that is compatible with Windows Vista. It is available as a download or as a CD. Please call our Sales Department to get either version of it or for answers to any related questions. They can be reached by dialing 1-800-888-9898 from 9:00 AM CST until 10:00 PM CST Monday through Friday.

Otherwise, if your have a CD that does not specifically say that it is compatible with Windows Vista, (except for our eBook Library CDs - they are compatible with Vista) then no, that CD is not compatible with Windows Vista.

You may be able to install our non-Vista compatible WORDsearch 7 CDs. You may be able to get some of your books installed. You may even be able to open and use some of your books. But, you may not be able to update the WORDsearch 7 program, you may not be able to unlock books over the internet and if you experience error messages, we may not even be able to offer any help to fix them. Please call our Sales and Customer Service Department to get help downloading or buying the WORDsearch 7 - Vista compatible program.

WORDsearch 7 Update
When WORDsearch 7 tries to update, I get the following error "An error has occurred while installing the update. Your program remains at the previous version. File Installation Error: File Copy error: Cannot create file "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7\Zipscript.exe. The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. "

This message means that ZipScript 7 is running in the background during the smart update. It was not able to automatically close ZipScript before the update.
To resolve this problem, simply close the ZipScript 7 program manually and run the smart update again.

How to close ZipScript:

  1. First, locate the ZipScript 7 icon in your system tray. It is a white Z on a blue circle and it is usually located in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen next to your system clock.
  2. Right click on the ZipScript 7 icon and select Exit.
  3. Run the Smart Update again by opening the WS7 program. Click on the Help menu and then Check for Updates.
Top Error Messages and problems
What do I do when I get the message "The WORDsearch server appears to be offline. Please try again."?
This message means that your computer cannot connect to our server.
Close WORDsearch 7.
Try disabling your virus scanner and/or your firewall program.
Most of these programs, have an icon in the system tray (in the lower right corner of your screen next to the time).
Right click on the icon and choose Disable. Then, open WORDsearch 7 and try again.
I am getting the error "Access violation at address xxxxxxxx in module "USP10.DLL". Read of address xxxxxxxx.”
This error can occur when clicking on a Strong's number in the KJV, or when opening Strong's or Vine's or any Word Study book. It can even occur when opening Adam Clarks Commentary.

The explanation to this error is too long to describe in this forum.
The fix is to delete the file USP10.DLL.
Follow the steps below to locate and delete USP10.DLL.

How To Find USP10.DLL to Delete it.

  1. Shut down WORDsearch 7
  2. Click on your Windows Start button
  3. Click on Run
  4. In the Run box, type the following: C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7
  5. Click on OK. (This should open a window to the WORDsearch 7 directory.)
  6. Look for the file USP10.DLL then delete it
  7. Start WORDsearch 7
  8. Test for the problem
When I try to run the WS7 update, I get the error message "A file creation error has occurred processing ZipScript.exe. Smart Update is unable to continue the update process. Please restart WORDsearch and try the update again."
This message means that ZipScript 7 is running in the background during the smart update. It was not automatically shut down for the update process.
To resolve this problem, simply exit the ZipScript 7 program and run the smart update again.

How to close ZipScript:
  1. First, locate the ZipScript 7 icon, a white Z on a blue circle, in your system tray next to your system clock. It is usually located in the lower right hand corner of your computer screen.
  2. Right click on the ZipScript 7 icon and select Exit.
  3. Run the Smart Update again by opening the WS7 program, clicking on the Help menu and then selecting Check for Updates.
When I try to run the WS7 update, I get the error message "XML document must have a top level element"
This is typically caused by firewall software and on some rare occasions your anti-virus software. Try disabling your firewall program and, if needed, your anti-virus program.
Most of these programs have an icon in the system tray (in the lower right corner of your screen next to the time). Right click on the icon and choose Disable. Then, run the update again - enter the WS7 library click on Help then select Check for Updates.
When I installed the CD, the install stopped around 80%. The screen may have said "Registering fonts." The whole computer locked up and I had to power off the computer.
Sometimes a computer will run out of resources and the CPU will get locked up trying to process the installation. Try the following:
Restart computer in Safe Mode and then install the CD.
How to Boot into Safe Mode:
  1. Shut down the computer completely.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately begin tapping on the F8 key as soon as it starts up.
(Tap on the F8 key like a woodpecker or, as if you were sending Morse code.)
This should get you to the "The Windows Advance Option" menu.
  3. Select Safe Mode from the "The Windows Advance Option" menu and press the Enter key.
  4. Select your operating system from the next screen, press Enter and this should slowly take you to the Windows desktop in Safe Mode.
  5. Once at the Windows desktop, insert your CD and install it as you normally would.
  6. After the installation, restart your computer to boot into normal mode.
When I start WORDsearch 7, I get the following error message “btLessons is not a valid book type.”

This error may appear many times - once for each Lesson book and volume that you have unlocked or installed. Clicking on each error message may eventually get you into the WORDsearch 7 library.

You may have also just downloaded and installed your books from the internet or you may have just installed our new Lesson Maker 8 CD.

If this scenario sounds like yours, then this error is caused by your new Lesson books. Our new Lesson books have recently been improved and require WORDsearch 7 to be updated in order to process them.

To resolve this error, simply follow the steps to update WORDsearch 7.

I cannot open some of my books. When I try to open a book I get the error message "Missing Book: The book entitled ... cannot be found. Clicking the refresh button below should correct any problems with the library display."
Sometimes updating the book resolves this problem.
  1. Right click on the book name in the library window. (This should produce a menu.)
  2. On the menu, click "Update book..." and select to update book from the internet or the eBook library CD.

If this does not resolve the problem, force a Smart Update of the program.
  1. Connect to the internet
  2. Enter the WORDsearch 7 library
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and keep it held down while you click on the Help menu and then select Check for Updates.
  4. When the "WORDsearch Update Available" window appears, let go of the Ctrl key and click on the button that says "yes, begin downloading."
The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge is in red but I own it. Why is it still in red?
Because this book is both a Preview book and an owned book, it will appear in red as a Preview book during the preview period. After the 30 day preview period, it will turn to black.
In WS5, I had a book called Torrey's Topical Textbook. After I installed WS7, I do not see it. Where is Torrey's Topical Textbook in WS7.
It is now called New Topical Textbook and it is in the Topics folder in the library window.
When I start my WS7 program I get the message "BE2 Converter: Could not detect valid BE3 installation. No notes or topics conversion done."
Resolution: Delete the file BE2Converter.EXE. It is located in the "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7" directory. To access this directory
  1. Click Start
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7" then click on OK. This should open a window and reveal the contents of the WORDsearch 7 directory. There you will find the file BE2Converter.EXE.
  4. Delete the file BE2Converter.EXE.
When I tried to reunlock my books, I got the error message, "This Version of the add-on-book catalog requires an updated program to display it. Please select the "Check for Updates" item from the Help Menu." But when I try to update WORDsearch 7, I get the message "You have the most current version of WORDsearch."
First, see if you can force an update of your program.

Here are the steps to force download the Smart Update:
  1. Connect to the internet
  2. Enter the WORDsearch 7 library
  3. Hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and keep it held down while you click on the Help menu and then select Check for Updates.
  4. When the "WORDsearch Update Available" window appears, let go of the Ctrl key and click on the button that says "yes, begin downloading"

Second, if this does not work, your personal firewall may be enabled. If yes, disable it then click on Help then Check for Updates. Most of these programs, have an icon in the system tray (in the lower right corner of your screen next to the time). Right click on the icon and choose "Disable".

Third, if you are still unable to update the program, look for and delete the following files:
  1. Versions.INI,
  2. Resources.DLL,
  3. Resources.Zip.DL
  4. WORDsearch.Zip.DL
Then, double click on the file Smartupdate.EXE. These files are located in "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7" directory. To access this directory, do the following:
  1. Click Start
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7" then click on OK. This should open a window and reveal the contents of the WORDsearch 7 directory.
  4. Once in there, delete the files. (Note, if you do not have the file WORDsearch.Zip.DL, that's OK. Move on to the next step)
  5. Double click on the file Smartupdate.EXE. This should run the update.

Conversion of WORDsearch 5 Data
How does the conversion of WORDsearch 5 books work?
During the installation of WORDsearch 7, it will run a WS7 Import program to search for data you had in WORDsearch 5 and import it into WORDsearch 7. The program scans the hard drive for STEP books purchased from WORDsearch and their unlock keys. It will make a list of these books and unlock them in WORDsearch 7.
What if I had WORDsearch 5 but it is no longer on my hard drive?
Call our Customer Service at 1-800-888-9898 to unlock your WS5 books in WORDsearch 7.
Can I read my WS5 desktops, personal commentary and personal topics in WORDsearch 7?
The WORDsearch 7 import program will search for these WS5 files and it will convert the data for WORDsearch 7. The personal topics will show up under My Documents in the WS7 library. Your personal commentary and the Ref lists and Desktop Notes from your Desktops will show up under My Verse lists in the WS7 library.
What if some of my WORDsearch 5 books are missing in WS7?
Open WS7 and click on Change the view options in the library window. Select "Title, Author" on the view options list. This will help you look for specific books that seem to be missing.
Some WS5 books are under different categories in WS7.
Also please note:
Bible Outlines are now in the Bibles. Open a Bible and click on the Show/Hide the Table of Contents icon to see the Bible's outline.
Bible Commentaries are also now in the Bibles. When you look at the Table of Contents of a Bible, you will see those Bibles with Commentary have Introductions to the Book, Front and Back Matter, etc.
Why are my Dake books not converting?
When you install WORDsearch 7, the program will find your Dake books on your hard drive and will unlock them in WORDsearch 7. All your Dake books except the Dake Study Notes will show up in the library with a red question mark. We do not sell those other Dake Books and therefore we cannot provide you with those files. However, Dake Publishing has converted those STEP books to the new CROSS format and has given them to us to make available to you by download.
If the Dake books were imported into WS7 with a red question mark, you can now click on the book and select "Install All Missing Books". This should put all your Dake books in the Download box so that you can start downloading them.
WS7 could only import your Dake books if they were installed on your hard drive. So, the best thing is to install the Dake books and run the WS7 import program. You can run the import program by typing "C:\Program Files\WORDsearch 7\ws7Import.exe" in your Start | Run box.
Where is my Treasury of Scripture Knowledge?
In WORDsearch 5, the TSK was a book on the bookshelf. In WORDsearch 7, it does not show up in the Library but rather in the Bible window's Cross References pane. Open a Bible and click on the Cross Refs icon (looks like a chain). Click on the "+" (plus sign) next to My Library and then click on the "+" (plus sign) next to Bibles. You will see the Treasury of Scripture Knowledge.
Where is my H.A.Ironside - Hebrews Commentary I had in WORDsearch 5?
If you had H.A. Ironside- Hebrews Cmy and it is not showing up in your WS7 program, please try the following:

If you have removed the H.A. Ironsides - Hebrews STEP book from WORDsearch 5 on your hard drive, then you will need to call us at 1-800-888-9898 to unlock it.

  1. Open WORDsearch 7 and click on the Help menu.
  2. Click Check for Updates.
  3. After you have downloaded the latest program files, close WORDsearch 7.

This will run the WS7 import program again. If you have H.A. Ironsides - Hebrews in your C:Navpress directory, click Next and then click Next again and it will scan your hard drive. It should find the book and convert it in WS7. When you installed WS7, it ran this program so it will probably ask you if you want to overwrite the files it imported before. Answer yes. If your H.A. Ironsides - Hebrews Cmy is located somewhere else on your hard drive, you will need to enter the path in the secondary location when asked.

The book should have a red question mark by it indicating that it is unlocked but not installed. You will need to either download the Cross version or install it from the Library CD volume 3. To install it from the CD:
  1. Insert eBook Library CD volume 3.
  2. Click on the title of the book, H.A. Ironsides - Hebrews.
  3. Select "Install all missing books" and click "Install from CD".

If you want to manually check for updates, click on the Help menu in the program and select Check for Updates.
