Old Testament

God's Word

Genesis 1:3

"And God said, Let there be light and there was light" (Genesis 1:3).

The Word of God was very prominent in the creation of the universe. (Psalms 33:6). Our text emphasizes this truth.

FIRST—THE PROMINENCE OF GOD'S WORD

"God said." Ten times in the first chapter of Genesis in the creation explanation we read the phrase, "God said" (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 10, 24, 26, 28, and 29). Coupled with other texts in the Scripture which speak of the creation being literally spoken into being by the Word of God, God's Word takes on a very prominent place in the work of God. If you are called to serve the Lord, the genuineness, and success of the call will be seen in the prominence of the Word of God in your life. God does not work apart from His Word.

SECOND—THE POWER OF GOD'S WORD

"God said." The Word of God is so powerful that God literally spoke the universe into being (Psalms 33:6). God's Word will not be pushed aside and ridiculed without Divine judgment manifesting the power of the Word. "The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved; he uttered his voice, the earth melted" (Psalm 46:6) shows the prevailing power of the Word of God when men think they have overthrown it. And there are many men and women, too, who think they have beat the Word of God by their profligate lives. But the Word is powerful and the defiance of man is no match for the Word of God.

THIRD—THE PRUDENCE OF GOD'S WORD

"God said." What follows these two words always makes sense. God does not babble and talk incoherently. The creation explanation, of God's Word makes sense in contrast to the idiotic explanation of such things as evolution. It is anything but intelligence to view the vast creation and say their was no maker or designer. Such things as the 'Big Bang' theory makes one scratch his head in amazement at the stupidity of men. There isn't another area of life where we are so stupid as to look at something and say it had no maker or designer and simply is a result of an explosion. If the 'Big Bang' theory is true than the ludicrous idea that a dictionary is a result of an explosion in a printing place is also true. The Word of God is not stupid but shows great prudence in what it says.

FOURTH—THE PRACTICALITY OF GOD'S WORD

"God said, Let there be light." The Bible certainly throws "light" on the subject it addresses. Since all the material for creation was in absolute darkness, it was necessary for light to be in order for the development of creation to come about. I remember, when in fourth grade, taking my Bible to school to show the teacher and students that light came before the sun. The poor teacher, a new one, had been taught godless things about creation at college. Most colleges reject the Bible, but our taxes support their unbelief. However, education apart from the Scriptures is nothing but degradation.
