Product Details

The New International Greek Testament Commentary (NIGTC) is one of the most highly respected commentaries on the New Testament. The NIGTC looks at the New Testament through a theological and historical lens to provide scholarly verse-by-verse exegesis.

Research at this level cannot be rushed. The first volume in the series was released over 37 years ago, and work still continues on the remaining few volumes. The authors chosen to write this commentary are leading Bible scholars who each have an unmatched understanding of the Greek New Testament. Each volume has been painstakingly researched and written. In print, the volumes so far have over 10,509 pages filled with excellent research. As an example, the volume on Matthew has 1,245 works listed as sources in the bibliography.

One of the best parts about the NIGTC is that you don’t need to understand Greek to use this commentary. Anyone with a desire to go deeper in God’s Word will come away from this work with a rich understanding of any given text. If you do have training in biblical languages, you’ll experience a deep appreciation for how the text is analyzed and exposed. But if you don’t have any language training, you’ll find the commentary is extremely readable and enlightening. Using the NIGTC often will help you grow fond of the New Testament Greek.

The NIGTC introduces each passage with the NIV text, followed by “Textual Notes.” This is where textual variants, language details, and difficulties are discussed. What follows is a detailed commentary that goes deep into the precise meaning of each word and phrase. Special attention is given to all important issues of history, exegesis, and interpretation that arise from the New Testament text. The introductions to each book could stand as books by themselves, giving you a deeper knowledge and understanding of the history, authorship, and important issues in each New Testament book.

Thousands of footnotes are embedded in the commentary, and in Wordsearch they appear as hyperlinks. If you hover over a footnote, the entire footnote pops up. If you click on the footnote, it appears in the commentary text in its entirety. Make sure you click on every footnote, because these nuggets of gold will enhance your study.
